Dera & Dance: Wangu’s Dance - The Dance That Wasn’t Meant For Her -

Ginga Bella

In 1902, Wangu wa Makeri was made a headman in colonial Murang'a — one of the very few women ever handed that authority. She led. And then she danced the Kibata, a dance that was never meant for a woman. It cost her everything. On Utamaduni Day, Dera & Dance invites you into a women-only evening built around one question: what have you lost because you led? An evening of story, movement and sisterhood — a red carpet walk through the stories of Kenya's forgotten heroines, a conversation circle, live performance, a traditional dance workshop, and an open floor of Ginga, Kizomba, Konpa and Afro-Zouk. Come in your Dera. Come ready to move. Photography notice: this event is photographed and filmed. By purchasing a ticket and attending, you consent to your image being captured and used in Dera & Dance and Ginga Bella Collective materials.
